Newcastle United want Goncalo Ramos but the Benfica striker has offered comments suggesting his loyalty to the Portuguese giants.
The Magpies have been chasing a new striking addition this summer, preferably a younger option.
Chris Wood and Callum Wilson are experienced Premier League strikers but adding a youngster for the future appears to have been a priority.
Hugo Ekitike, Sekou Mara and Benjamin Sesko were all prime Newcastle targets but ended up going elsewhere instead.
That means Newcastle have to look elsewhere and they appear to be eyeing up Benfica talent Ramos.
Newcastle United want Goncalo Ramos
Portuguese reporter Pedro Sepulveda – who broke the news of Arsenal signing Porto playmaker Fabio Vieira earlier this summer – reported last week that Newcastle are ready to offer £25million for Ramos.
Sepulveda then suggested to Sky Sports that new Benfica boss Roger Schmidt prefers other strikers at the club to Ramos, so a deal could be on the cards with Newcastle.
However, Ramos seemingly isn’t angling for a move away from Benfica this summer.
As quoted by 90Min, Ramos has suggested that Benfica is the only thing that matters to him right now and he appears to be happy there.
“I’m at Benfica, I’m fine, we’re playing well,” said Ramos. “What matters to me is Benfica,” he added.
Ramos, 21, has emerged in the Benfica ranks and managed eight goals as well as four assists in all competitions last season.
Primarily a striker or shadow striker, Ramos already has a hat-trick this season having demolished Midtjylland in the Champions League qualifiers.
There are high hopes for Ramos and Newcastle are seemingly pushing to bring him to St James’ Park.
Sepulveda suggested that Benfica wouldn’t sell for anything less than €30million (£25million), so Newcastle may well be able to get a deal done with the club.
Convincing Ramos would then be the next task for Newcastle, but if they can promise him a key role in their new project, a move to Newcastle may well appeal.
Ramos appears to be the main name to keep tabs on in terms of Newcastle’s attacking pursuit, with the Magpies hoping to finally get a striker on board.
